Ipswich WICEN coordinator Robert VK4KHW reported at last month’s business meeting that the Lake Manchester event went well and thanked all volunteers who assisted with radio communications. The number of runners was down on previous years. The Pinnacles event which was to held on September 25 was cancelled owing to weather conditions affecting the course. At this stage it may not be rescheduled. The last event Ipswich WICEN will support for this year is the Mt Glorious Trail on Sunday November 13. Please contact Robert on email; ipswichwicen@gmail.com if you can help with manning one of several radio checkpoints. In other club news, training officer Greg VK4GJW will start a new Foundation licence course from this Tuesday October 4 with proposed exam dates being around December 4. On November 14, a social night at the clubhouse, a flowerpot antenna building workshop will be held. You are welcome to attend and learn how to construct and then take home a cheap dual band antenna ideal for portable and outside work, such as WICEN events. And finally, the club has welcomed three new members Kerry Black VK4KDB, David Zeibarth and Kelly Thompson. Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT. ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I’m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I’ve been thinking. There have been many stories created around the lines “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. You may know the reference if your English classes covered the literature of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. None the less, I thought it an appropriate point to make this week. The weather pattern has been bringing storms with the resulting crashes from speakers when tuned to HF but propagation has been providing good DX. The southern hemisphere is moving into the summer pattern of radio signals coming in on different modes and there are contests coming to enjoy. The earthly weather is forecast to be wetter and possibly wilder than the norm so field day activities may be a mixed bag for this period. During the week we have had figures from the financial world showing us that major currencies are falling in value, share prices managed to drop and for those of us depending on providing our own transport, fuel prices have jumped higher. All these indicators suggest we should be tightening the purse strings whilst the financial regulators struggle to tame the inflation demon. However, it depends on which currencies give us the best benefit which may determine our buying patterns for new equipment and travel. At the moment, I understand that the local dollar has hit a 40 year low but conversion rates favour spending in New Zealand. It is all so interesting but I remain confused about what the situation will be when it is time to place presents under the Christmas tree. The availability of money for personal expenditures such as radio equipment is a consideration for us personally but for the club planning activities, it is also. With fuel prices increased, hiring transport rather than each operator travelling separately will probably the most efficient means of getting to events. The logistics of transporting equipment is another matter to add to the planning. Perhaps there will be cause for people to revive onboard entertainment other than allowing the mobile phone attention deficit disorder to prevail. Venue choices for contesting and field days may need to allow for not only inclement weather but also dangerous conditions as we approach the tropical cyclone season. Being able to travel and stay safely also suggests that the return journey is able to be accomplished as well. The nice hilly vantage point that is reached by shallow water crossings may have to be substituted for a less advantageous site that gives shelter and a safe way home instead. For many things, suitable alternatives can be found like using a country hall that allows for people to use camp beds or sleeping bags as a substitute for the 4x4 trek and sleeping under the stars. Sharing fuel and hire costs for a mini-bus can be more effective than everyone making their own way to a site and doing as much planning on the travel plans as the station layout can make the whole event more efficient. It can be the best of times and doesn’t have to be the worst of times and I’m Geoff Emery and that’s what I think.how about you?
